“I'm honored to receive these scholarships, because I know they are awarded to students that they believe in."
Long-time philanthropist George Ow, Jr. and his family have been providing American Dream Scholarships of $500 to local ethnic minority high school seniors for 27 years.
2016 recipient, Rex Gomez, has gone on to make Cabrillo proud both on the baseball field and in the classroom. He and his team won 29 of their 44 games this season! Adding to the excitement, Rex learned last spring that he has been awarded the CoastHills Gold Standard Scholarship of $2,500. These latest achievements show that the American Dream Scholarship was just a launching point for this soft spoken, but ambitious and hard working young man. He reports, “I take pride in my schoolwork and have earned a 3.8 grade point average so far.”
Rex will use this award to continue on his path towards a degree in kinesiology, an area of study he found after a knee injury in high school. He likes the idea of helping both his fellow athletes and those on the mend get to full strength.
Remembering last year’s American Dream Scholarship Ceremony where he spoke, Rex recalls deciding to ditch his notes and speak from the heart. “I wanted to express my appreciation for how the scholarship helps me pay for my classes and for the extra gas money to get to all of my baseball practices,” he explains. This support is making it possible for Rex to pursue his dreams and perhaps be the first in his family to obtain a college degree.
